Privacy
These issues affect me because it is my privacy that is at stake. And it is my information that is out there without my permission. To me it is the same as having a camera crew record your life from the time you are awake to the time you are asleep and to make matters worse you didn’t give them permission to do so and you can’t get rid of them. We actually have a term for people who follow other people around without their knowledge or permission, those people are called stalkers. The online difference is that they are physical beings where as those people on the internet are faceless. The issues of privacy affect my friends and family since they use a lot of social media and use the internet and as such they are getting there data and privacy rights ripped from them without them even knowing that it is happening.
The government needs to be reigning in these companies and protecting our right to privacy. They need to put limits on what these organizations are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do they also need to put limits on themselves to prevent the government from doing the same things those organizations are doing. People need to know what each organizations has on them and be able to say no you can not violate my privacy or collect my data. And they need to make it published more like by running ads. For example I have been using Google since kindergarten and have had an account since middle school and it was only after watching a video on AI and data gathering yesterday that I looked into my privacy settings more closely and I only just found out after digging around in my settings that Google will send all the data they have collected of you in a certain amount of time to you so you can look at it. I had no idea until yesterday that was possible, why because they do not really want to tell you beyond bare minimum requirements for what is following the current laws on privacy. Also just like how we have the UN to set policy’s that all countries who are apart are meant to abide by. We should have international laws or agreements to protect our rights online in case of an invasion of privacy. They also really need to teach about this these types of issues and how to protect yourself at school as well just as we were taught about drug use and alcoholism in health class we need to talk about this as well.
In order to protect our privacy we can use encrypted devices or get an app that protects us when we go online like Norton Privacy Monitor or LifeLock and you can use things like Apple iMessages and WhatsApp and even FaceTime. You can also try to encrypt your data. You can also check the privacy settings that you have on your devices and social media accounts to make sure they are how you want them to be. Also another great form of protection is knowledge, the knowledge that some devices and sources like Microsoft and google can track you and basically wiretap you. So having knowledge that it exists still and where it is done means that you can avoid using those devices and applications that do such things.
